Campaigns: Getting things done

If you don't like something about your neighbourhood, use a campaign to change it! But to be successful, you will need publicity.

Putting all the news about your campaign on your group's website, then posting new information on how it's all going gets attention for the issues you care about.

The 'Campaigns' part of your website works in the same way as the 'Local News' section. The layout changes as you add content to it. When you write a new article, it appears at the top and the existing content gets pushed down the page.

If you want, you can have some 'fixed' information at the top of the page that you always want to display. Down below however, you can add some articles to keep people updated as things change.

In our area, we live in a beautiful valley, but our open space is wanted for housing. So this part of the page would be a great place to tell people the basic details of the issue, while you can see the latest headlines of our campaign are displayed in an eye-catching way further down.

Council decision out!Judging by the number of responses to the proposed building plans for the land above our valley, we know people care deeply about this project. They will be interested therefore to hear what the latest version of the building project has in store for us: larger section sizes!

The new proposal goes before our community board, and from there to the council for adoption, with a chance for public submissions after that.

Residents will recall that we recently rejected a high density project that featured small section sizes. As a result of our submissions, the new proposal is to make the minimum section size 750 m2 between the road frontage and a line based around the 20 metre contour and a proposed waterway corridor.

Feedback arriving.

[Editor: In response to the proposed hillside building plans your feedback is on its way. Thanks for doing it Heathcote, it is much appreciated. Don't know what's happening? Take a look here for details. Some of you have kindly agreed to share your feedback with visitors to this site, here are some quotes.]

What this person has to say should give any planner pause for thought:

"If the horticultural area is subdivided, we will have lost the last of this defining characteristic of the valley."

"The statement quoted in the draft plan that housing on this land would 'round off the community' is nonsense."

Building project. The planners asked us to tell them what we thought of the proposed plans to build on land above the valley and we did, 115 times! The results are in, and they say people are overwhelmingly in favour of a lower density project on this site.

Instead of the high density 'preferred development option', they want fewer houses, bigger section sizes, and to keep it all on the lower slopes with the rest of the land to be acquired by the council as a reserve.

The council's tally of the results shows that 86 out of 100 people favour lower density housing, with a further 8 wanting none at all. Only 6 replies were in favour of a more intensive project. With such a huge majority of people against this so-called preferred proposal, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
